We receive joy when reaching a goal. And the thought of such joy give us motivation. The more grand a goal, the more joy you will receive at achieving it. But if you can't get the goal or takes too much pain to reach the goal, the pain overides your joy.

I don't think life is about with path we walk. Rather is about joy seeking. Then setting goal is merely a mean to realizing those joys along the path. Do you like eat your icecreams with big bits or lick your way in? It is your style. Which goals to set is also a style problem.

But I think we have more fundmental reasons for the joy when achieving goal. That reason differentiates this goal from that goal. Some goal is more grand than others, and some goal is more joyful than others to achieve.
